Micro Scholarships in Kenya and the united states
Njeri's Global Children Foundation has been committed to providing seed funding to chosen educational institutions in Kenya and the United States for the past 9 years. Each year the foundation grants 40,000 Kenyan Shillings (Ksh) to students in Kenyan institutions and $500 U.S. Dollars to one selected institution in the United States .
Through an essay competition, identified candidates are asked to address subjects such as, “In every child there is a stroke of genius which economic injustice suppresses;” or “Young women as potential targets of ovarian cancer”. The scholarship is awarded to the winner.
Guidelines for selecting winners
- The process for selecting the winner(s) should be collective and not one individual’s decision
- The process should also be open, democratic and transparent
- The foundation suggests that a committee, or adjudicating team be set up to evaluate the applications
- The foundation also suggests that the award be publicly announced and widely advertised
- All underprivileged students should be encouraged to apply
- A report should be sent to the foundation by each institution detailing how the selection was done, with a brief biography on each winner
- The foundation recommends that the award be presented at the school’s annual award ceremony or any such public, celebratory forum that recognizes student-achievement
